So, if competing and becoming a champion is one of your goals, we at the John Kim's Martial Arts School can help you get there like no other school can.

Sport Taekwondo Competition Sparring

Sport Tae Kwon Do is one of the fastest moving sports out there. Athleticism is a must. Rounds are any where from 2 to 3 minutes per round. There are normally 2 to 3 rounds per match. So a National level match could last up to 9 minutes total with the possibily of a sudden death round. If there is a tie score at the end of the regulation rounds then a sudden death round is awarded.  In a sudden death round the first person to score a point wins the match. If no one scores in the sudden death round then it is turned over to a judges decision. The only time you will see a sudden death round is if there is a tie score after the regualtion rounds.

Competitors wear a head gear, a chest gaurd, shin pads, fore arm gaurds, and mouth gaurd. A groin protector is mandatory for male competitors. The chest gaurds are double sided with one side being red and the other side blue. A competitor is designated a color during each match.

Sport Taekwondo Points System

To score a point you must strike the chest gaurd with a decent amount of force. Kicking the chest gaurd is the most effective and most common way to score. There is one point awarded for a kick to the body. If the opponent is knocked down from the kick to the body then another point is awarded. Kicking to the face will score 2 points. If the kick to the face causes the opponent to fall a standing eight count will be given by the referree. Another point will be added which turns it into a 3 point play. If a kick to the body or face causes your opponent to fall down for 10 seconds then it is considered a knock out or technical knock out and you will win the match. Punches to the chest score 1 point if your punch can stop the momentum of your opponent. Punches will also score if you knock your opponent down or backwards with a punch directed at the chest. Punches are rarely scored.
